EWANGELIA - Mt 21, 23-27 (Skąd pochodził chrzest Janowy?)

Gdy Jezus przyszedł do świątyni i nauczał, przystąpili do Niego arcykapłani i starsi ludu, pytając: «Jakim prawem to czynisz? i kto Ci dał tę władzę?»
Jezus im odpowiedział: «Ja też zadam wam jedno pytanie: jeśli odpowiecie Mi na nie, i Ja powiem wam, jakim prawem to czynię. Skąd pochodził chrzest Janowy: z nieba czy od ludzi?»
Oni zastanawiali się między sobą: «Jeśli powiemy: „z nieba”, to nam zarzuci: „Dlaczego więc nie uwierzyliście mu?” A jeśli powiemy: „od ludzi”, to boimy się tłumu, bo wszyscy uważają Jana za proroka».
Odpowiedzieli więc Jezusowi: «Nie wiemy». On również im odpowiedział: «Zatem i Ja wam nie powiem, jakim prawem to czynię».

MEDYTACJA

Faryzeusze szukali oparcia w prawie, strukturze, w ustalonych i niezmiennych zasadach. Takie obiektywne i ścisłe reguły dają poczucie bezpieczeństwa, zwalniają z odpowiedzialności, z potrzeby ciągłego poszukiwania, z konieczności podejmowania decyzji. Globalnie wolimy czarno-białe zasady niż niepewność związaną z wielobarwną rzeczywistością wokół nas...

Jezus szanuje postawę faryzeuszy. Wchodzi w dialog z nimi, używając ich własnej czarno-białej logiki. Dzięki temu pozwala im samym doświadczyć niepewności. Zaprasza do uruchomienia ich własnych sumień, do wejścia na drogę poszukiwania, wiary, rozeznawania...

Końcowa odpowiedź Jezusa nie jest ucieczką, ale raczej zmianą perspektywy. Jezus nie działa mocą prawa, ale mocą Ducha wolności, który wieje, kędy chce. Ten sam Boży Duch działa w nas: w naszych pragnieniach, tęsknotach, radościach i zachwytach. Dodaje otuchy w trudnych chwilach i wlewa w nas głęboki pokój. Spróbujmy poszukać Jego obecności w codziennym życiu...

Przebiegłość ludzka często zawodzi. Zbytnie pokładanie ufności we własnych zdolnościach zamyka umysł, a w konsekwencji serce na prawdę, na drugiego człowieka...

Jezus poskramia podstęp arcykapłanów ich własną bronią. Na postawione pytanie odpowiada pytaniem: 'Ja też zadam wam jedno pytanie' (Mt 21, 25). Człowiek, który nie upatruje podstępu jest szczęśliwszy...

Wyrzucenie handlarzy ze świątyni było spektakularne, ale wzbudziło kwestię, kto Jezusa upoważnił do takiego działania. Arcykapłani i starsi nie tyle pytają Jezusa o to, lecz prowadzą 'dochodzenie w sprawie', przesłuchują Go...

Arcykapłani i starsi boją się podjąć ryzyko opowiedzenia się za Bożą inspiracją, kiedy Jezus zwraca uwagę na Jana Chrzciciela. Próbują politycznie zachować równowagę i neutralną dyplomację, co ostatecznie prowadzi ich do odrzucenia Jana Chrzciciela i Jezusa. Życie wiarą wymaga opowiedzenia się, zajęcia stanowiska i nawrócenia...

Odpowiedzieć na jedno pytanie. Gdy człowiek boi się ryzyka w wierze, nie będzie zdolny do przyjęcia prawdy Słowa Bożego i nie podejmie działania zgodnego
z jego logiką. Pytanie Jezusa nie jest ‘unikiem’. Każdy musi się z nim zmierzyć...

"Jakim prawem to czynisz?" (Mt 21, 23). To jedno z wielu pytań pojawiających się w Ewangelii. Z punktu widzenia gramatyki wszystko jest tu poprawne. Poszukując odpowiedzi na to pytanie oczekujemy prawdy, potwierdzenia swoich przekonań i kolejnych argumentów, które je umocnią...

Poszukiwanie kolejnych argumentów często paraliżuje. Prowadzi do wewnętrznych dialogów, które zamiast dawać siłę do podążania za prawdą, zatrzymują nas w miejscu, utrwalając nasze myśli. Jezus wielokrotnie powtarzał, że przyszedł dać świadectwo prawdzie. Ta droga poprowadziła Go przez krzyż ku zmartwychwstaniu. Ze śmierci do życia. I właśnie życia szukajmy...

...Jezu, proszę o odwagę życia w prawdzie i serce wolne od konformizmu... Proszę o łaskę odwagi usłyszenia i opowiedzenia się za Janowym i Twoim wezwaniem do nawrócenia... Dziękuję za wyrzuty sumienia, które demaskują moje życie pozorami...

GOSPEL - Mt 21, 23-27 (Where did John's baptism come from?)

When Jesus had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, saying, "By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?"
Jesus answered them, "I will ask you one question: if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things. From where did John's baptism come, from heaven or from men?"
They were saying to one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From men,' we fear
the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet."
So they answered Jesus, 'We do not know.' And he said to them, 'Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.'

MEDITATION

The Pharisees sought support in law, structure, established and unchanging principles. Such objective and strict rules give a sense of security, exempt from responsibility, from the need for constant searching, from the necessity of making decisions. Globally, we prefer black-and-white rules to the uncertainty associated with the multi-colored reality around us...

Jesus respects the attitude of the Pharisees. He enters into a dialogue with them, using their own black-and-white logic. Thanks to this, he allows them to experience uncertainty themselves. He invites them to activate their own consciences, to enter the path of searching, faith, discernment...

Jesus' final answer is not an escape, but rather a change of perspective. Jesus does not act by the power of the law, but by the power of the Spirit of freedom, which blows wherever it wills. The same Spirit of God acts in us: in our desires, longings, joys and delights. He encourages us in difficult moments and pours deep peace into us. Let us try to seek His presence in everyday life...

Human cunning often fails. Trusting too much in one's own abilities closes the mind and consequently the heart to the truth, to the other person...

Jesus curbs the high priests' deception with their own weapons. When asked a question, he answers it with a question: 'I will ask you one question'
(Mt 21:25). The person who does not see deception is happier...

The expulsion of the merchants from the temple was spectacular, but it raised the question of who authorized Jesus to act in this way. The high priests and elders do not so much ask Jesus about it, but conduct an 'investigation into the matter', interrogate Him...

The high priests and elders are afraid to take the risk of standing up for God's inspiration when Jesus draws attention to John the Baptist. They try to maintain political balance and neutral diplomacy, which ultimately leads them to reject John the Baptist and Jesus. Living by faith requires standing up, taking a stand and converting...

Answering one question. When a person is afraid of risk in faith, they will not be able to accept the truth of God's Word and will not act in accordance with its logic. Jesus' question is not a "dodge". Everyone has to face it...

The chief priests and the elders of the people are representatives of the Sanhedrin, the council of Jewish leaders in Jerusalem. These two groups will soon be conducting a case against Jesus, conspiring to bring about his death...

The chief priests and the elders of the people are outraged by Jesus' actions from the previous day: putting the temple in order, rejecting the rules related to the Sabbath. "By what authority do you do these things?" (Mt 21:23). This is one of many questions that appear in the Gospel. From the point of view of grammar, everything here is correct. In seeking an answer to this question, we expect truth, confirmation of our beliefs and further arguments that will strengthen them...

Searching for further arguments is often paralyzing. It leads to internal dialogues that, instead of giving us strength to follow the truth, stop us in our tracks, perpetuating our thoughts. Jesus repeated many times that he came to bear witness to the truth. This path led him through the cross to resurrection. From death to life. And it is life that we seek...

...Jesus, I ask for the courage to live in truth and a heart free from conformism... I ask for the grace of courage to hear and stand for John's and Your call to conversion... Thank you for the pangs of conscience that unmask my life with appearances...
